Jan Koblasa
October 5, 1932, Tábor – October 3, 2017, Hamburg, Germany
One of the most important Czech sculptors, a painter, a graphic designer, a stage designer, a poet and a musician. Koblasa‘s sculptural work is a part of mainly German and European art. In the Czech Republic, there are just few pieces of his work. His major achievements include Gustav Mahler‘s statue and other sculptural objects at Gustav Mahler Park in Jihlava.
By sculptures in the park at the end of Benešova Street in Jihlava, Jan Koblasa appreciated one of the greatest musical giants, Gustav Mahler, who spent fifteen years living in a pair of houses number 4 and 6 in Znojemska Street. The exhibition of Jan Koblasa in the Gustav Mahler House symbolically connects two artists who have significantly influenced the Jihlava environment and, in connection with the exhibition Young Gustav Mahler and Jihlava, confronts the artist‘s undoubtedly modern works with the historical form of Jihlava in the second half of the 19th century. In the same way as Jan Koblasa was thinking of Mahler as an artist at the top of his creative powers, this exposition introduces him during his sculpture work. Sketches, models and not yet placed artifacts present art in its unfinished, abstract dimension. In Jan Koblasa‘s exposition, his most significant Jihlava realization is born, just as Gustav Mahler in Koblasa‘s presentation listens to the still unfinished symphony.
